Abstract
Objective: Rapid technological advancement and the increasing global emphasis on sustainability have prompted higher education institutions to explore how technological innovations can foster environmentally responsible learning. As universities increasingly integrate digital infrastructures into teaching, learning, and administrative processes, understanding how technological innovation can shape students’ green behaviors in digital learning contexts has become critical. This study aims to examine the direct effect of technological innovation on green digital learning and to investigate whether digital marketing capability moderates this relationship. The theoretical significance of the research lies in combining three key constructs technological innovation, digital marketing capability, and green digital learning into a unified framework that highlights the mechanisms through which higher education can promote sustainability-oriented skills, attitudes, and behaviors among students, thereby contributing to environmentally responsible digital education practices. Moreover, this study addresses a research gap in understanding how organizational capabilities and technological adoption interact to enhance sustainable learning outcomes in digital contexts.
Method: A descriptive–correlational research design utilizing structural equation modeling(SEM) was employed. The statistical population consisted of approximately 12,000 students at Urmia University, representing a diverse set of faculties and academic levels. Based on the Morgan table, a minimum sample of 384 participants was required; however, to increase reliability and ensure broader representation, 500 electronic questionnaires were distributed via cluster sampling. The research instrument comprised a standardized and validated questionnaire measuring three constructs: technological innovation, digital marketing capability, and green digital learning. Technological innovation was conceptualized as the adoption of modern digital tools, interactive learning platforms, intelligent systems, and environmentally optimized technologies within the university environment. Digital marketing capability assessed the institution’s ability to leverage digital communication channels, provide personalized content, and engage stakeholders effectively in sustainability-oriented learning initiatives. Green digital learning captured students’ environmentally responsible attitudes, behaviors, and skills in digital learning environments, including conscious resource usage, reduction of digital waste, and engagement with eco-friendly digital learning practices. Data preprocessing and reliability checks were conducted using SPSS 23, while Smart PLS 3 was used to test the measurement and structural models, including path coefficients, R², t-values, and the moderating effects of digital marketing capability.
Results: The findings demonstrated that technological innovation has a significant and positive direct effect on green digital learning. Universities that implement advanced technologies such as cloud-based learning systems, intelligent platforms, energy-efficient applications, and integrated learning management systems—enhance students’ environmental awareness and promote sustainable behaviors in digital contexts. Exposure to these technologies encourages students to adopt resource-conscious practices, improve their environmental attitudes, and actively participate in eco-friendly digital learning activities. Furthermore, digital marketing capability was found to positively moderate the relationship between technological innovation and green digital learning. Although the strength of this moderating effect was moderate, it was statistically significant, indicating that institutions with strong digital marketing capabilities through targeted campaigns, personalized content, interactive communication, and stakeholder engagement can more effectively translate technological innovations into enhanced sustainability outcomes. Digital marketing capability functions as an enabling factor that amplifies the impact of technological innovation on students’ environmentally responsible behaviors by increasing awareness, accessibility, and engagement with sustainability-oriented digital content. The findings also underscore that the interplay between technology adoption and marketing competence can enhance institutional capacity to promote environmentally responsible digital learning at scale.
Conclusion: This study highlights that technological innovation is a fundamental driver of green digital learning, while digital marketing capability strengthens this effect by improving the visibility, relevance, and adoption of sustainability-focused digital tools and content. Educational administrators and policymakers are encouraged to invest simultaneously in advanced technological infrastructures and digital marketing competence to cultivate environmentally responsible learners. Practical applications of these findings include designing digital campaigns that promote eco-friendly behaviors, embedding sustainability principles within digital course materials, developing interactive and personalized communication channels, and encouraging faculty to integrate green digital literacy into teaching practices. Collectively, these interventions can enhance students’ sustainable learning behaviors, foster environmental awareness, and contribute to establishing a culture of green digital learning in higher education. From a theoretical standpoint, the study contributes to the growing literature on innovation-driven sustainability in education by demonstrating the importance of combining technological innovation with organizational digital capabilities. Future research may explore additional mediating or moderating variables, including digital literacy, learner engagement, environmental attitudes, institutional culture, and green innovation climate. Longitudinal studies could examine how the interaction between technological innovation and digital marketing capability affects green digital behaviors over time, particularly as universities increasingly adopt emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and adaptive learning systems. Overall, sustainable digital learning requires not only technological adoption but also strategic communication and capability development. By aligning technological innovation with digital marketing practices, higher education institutions can strengthen students’ environmental consciousness, cultivate sustainable learning practices, and meaningfully contribute to broader sustainability goals in the digital era.
